It is advised that you replace you pillow every six months. Now I know that most people dont do that but maybe every couple of years they do. As mentioned in my previous blog kapok pillows last for a really long time well the kapok does anyway so they are not only cost effective but you are doing a great service to the environment by keeping them out of landfill. My mother has had hers for forty years and it was second hand when she got it. The reason it lasts so long is because of the incredible feature of kapok fibre being resistant to moister. This means that it doesnt go mouldy and disintegrate like other fibres. Also the fact that it is naturally resistant to dust mites means that they cant soil it helping the kapok stay naturally clean. Anyway I have had other similar phone calls and emails and it is another reason why I recommend kapok pillows to every body. I dont think this is necessary as the kapok does not escape from the pillow shell and I believe that three layers of fabric between you and the kapok pillow shell protector and pillow case would impede the malleability of the pillow which I have mentioned before is one of the kapok pillow best features. Also dry cleaning was mentioned as a preferable way to clean your pillow. I would advise against dry cleaning because for one it is unnessasary and two it uses toxic chemicals. I assume that even if you found a green dry cleaner they would still have to use some toxic chemicals. Kapok has natural antibacterial qualities but I advise airing your pillow in the sun as often as possible about once a month should suffice as this cleanses the pillow and freshens it. I have mine filled with 700g and fluff it in the sun about once every week or two or in winter put it in the dryer for a bit. This keeps it just fluffy enough while keeping its malleability. The fact that it is malleable is brilliant it means that when I am lying on my side I can dig a little hole for my ear and it stays there otherwise I get a squashed ear. I used to go to sleep with my hand under my head and my ear between my thumb and finger so my ear wouldnt get squashed. Weird uh. Also when I am lying on my back I can scrunch the pillow to support my neck. Absolute bliss If I wake in the night I usually do once or sometimes twice I sometimes flip my pillow over and then I have a nice high bit for support that I just have to adjust a bit to get right.
